The glass cairn
This was from the Excavate: Overlay project, devised by Sara Bowler and mainly funded by the Scottish Arts Council. I was one of the participants on this public event which aimed to make visible underground prehistoric structures through the use of a material that was not only beautiful, but that represented craft knowledge gleaned over centuries, and the work of making and transporting objects. The glass was constructed by Chris Jones and Katie Brown based in North Lands Creative Glass in Lybster, Caithness. What was fascinating about this project was that, although I was the writer on the project, I was drafted in to help construct the transforming glass structures, to pack and unpack the blocks and generally help move them. This activity gave me a very different concept of the landscape and the objects than if I had not been as intimately involved.
