The second but really first rubifier
After I had envisaged the rubifier, I began to do some 'proper' research into alchemy and was stunned when I came across this image by Andreas Libavius. It represents an alchemical furnace. I felt the similarity between the rubifier and this image had shown how leaps of imagination and apparent whimsy can actually allow one to understand what was previously (in the seventeenth-century) an early scientific piece of equipment.
