The aim of the critical writing commission is to develop the practice of art, craft and design within a cross-cultural context alongside the theoretical discourse around these practices.
As such, this commission aims not only to document the outgoing artists' practice but also to explore the processes and reasons for documentation, and ultimately to see writing not simply as a tool but a creative practice in itself within the more general context of material culture as a whole. To this end, I am also undertaking my own research in order to challenge and stretch my role as critical writer.
This writing commission is one of a series of commissions with one writer located in each host country. It is hoped that each writer will contribute to both the documentation and the exploration of cross-cultural theories.
I see my role as the critical writer to consider my specific relationship to each artists'individual practice, to interview the artists and to support them in the development of their ideas where required.
It is hoped that each residency will generate an aspect of new critical writing around art, craft and design practice. This will hopefully lead to an article about your practice specifically.
It is also hoped that there will be other outputs of theoretical writing that will also explore the role of writing and documentation within a context of more general material culture. Though what form and shape these will take is very difficult to know as yet. All the writings and images that appear on here will be tentative and probably partial!
