Tabitha Moses
Residency at Beaconhouse National University
I am an artist who explores objects and clothing as carriers of identity, memory and loss, responding to and revealing the histories of people, spaces and places.
I create artefacts from material which bears the weight of memory and the marks of time. Considering the psychic and physical impressions left by previous owners, I re-configure the stained, worn, torn and mended cloth.
The objects I make are tokens of remembrance, souvenirs and relics. Exquisitely hand-stitched, from a distance they appear delicate and seductive, but up close they may induce repulsion. This is achieved through the use of materials such as human hair and stained fabric. The audience is visually seduced and then forced to question the very notion of beauty. It has also been said that in using such materials tenderly I negate their repulsive qualities.
True histories and authentic objects are combined with a sense of theatre and artifice in order to seduce, still or discomfit the spectator.
I have exhibited in museums, country houses and gardens as well as conventional gallery spaces, and enjoy engaging a mixed (art and non-art) audience.
