Christine Cholewa
Originally from Canada, I have been living in Adelaide, South Australia for the past two and a half years. Currently my studio and practice and home is in Adelaide, having completed the JamFactory Associate Training Program last December. For the past two years my focus has been working in a production glass studio learning and improving techniques and gaining experience as a production glassblower creating functional objects. During this time I have also been involved in exhibitions, working on more concept driven work.
Having access and time in a studio in Farnham would allow me to go back to these conceptual ideas, and research the process and intent further. After two years of intense technical making, it would be a welcomed change to have some time to reflect and figure out what I want to make and why. I feel I am at a time in my career to best benefit from having research time to further influence my work.
Technically I would be exploring different ways in which to put image onto the glass, through various hot and cold processes, engraving, enameling, decals, hot glass cane drawing, etc. It is my aim to include more drawing in my practice, and then use these drawings in my work.
Recently I have been learning more about environmental issues and alternative sustainable living practices, as well as human wastefulness. I am curious about people and their environments, garbage, waste and lifestyle, and how we relate with each other.
My time at Farnham will be exploring, creating, making mistakes, trying new techniques and getting back to old ideas to see if they are worth anything. I also want to explore more of my practice in drawing, and other mediums away from glass, and consider different ways to exhibit these works together. Upon completion of this residency it would be my goal to return to Adelaide and then focus on creating a body of work to exhibit in relation to what I learn while in Farnham.
